Ergonomics for the Eyes

Long touted as good for backs and necks, proper desk ergonomics are also important for the health and comfort of the eyes. In support of Workplace Eye Wellness Month in March, the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) is offering tips to desk workers everywhere whose eyes may need relief from too much screen time.

Stay at arm's length: Eyes work harder to see up close than farther away. Place your computer about 25 inches from your face.

Take care of glare: Use a glass screen device or try a matte filter for your computer screens to help with glare.

Give your eyes a break: Follow the 20-20-20 rule, take a break every 20 minutes by looking at an object 20 ft away for 20 seconds.

Defy dry eye: Try a desktop humidifier to add moisture to air and keep artificial tear drops handy.

Lighten up: Adjust your environmental lighting to reduce eye strain in bright surroundings.
